The People of Okinawa: Embrace Old Age and Live Past 100

The more that researchers study groups of people who live long lives, the more it becomes apparent that it is important to lead an integrated lifestyle which encompasses a healthy body, mind, soul and spirit. Scientists believe this to be a key in slowing down the aging process.

One of the places that anthropologists continue to look at, is the small island off of the coast of Japan called Okinawa. The residents of this island have been considered to be the world’s healthiest people.  They live well into their 90’s and 100’s & have very low rates of heart disease, memory loss, breast, colon and prostate cancer, obesity and osteoporosis.  Researchers believe that the longevity seen in these Japanese people is due to a combination of things – diet, exercise, stress management, strong family ties and spiritual connectedness.

The people of Okinawa eat a low calorie diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, soy, fish, and green tea.  Their lifestyle incorporates daily exercise that helps them to connect the mind, body and spirit.  They engage in traditional martial arts like Tai Chi, traditional dance, gardening and walking.  They live life at a pace much slower and more purposeful than most in the Western world.  Acupressure, massage and meditation are important in helping to control their emotions and relieve stress.  The people of Okinawa have a sense of spirituality, living life for a higher purpose, for something or someone outside of oneself.  (Of course, this other-centered focus is very much absent in the western world).  It seems that people with a sense of purpose are less vulnerable to depression and have stronger immune systems.  

We can definitely glean anti aging tips from the people of Okinawa – maintain a healthy diet and live an active lifestyle, be emotionally connected and free and live life to the fullest with purpose and design.
