Signs of Aging Skin

Our skin has been aging from the day we were born. No longer do we have that baby soft skin. Instead, over time, our skin has become rough, tough and splotchy. Skin may be full of deep wrinkles or small crow's feet. We may have discolorations, and surface spider veins. We buy more and more "cover-ups" hoping that our friends and aquaintances will not notice the visible signs that we are getting older!

What Causes our Skin to Age?

Unfortunatley, to a large degree our aging process is genetic. If we got the "good genes" from our parents and grandparents, we may show the signs of our aging much more slowly. Eventually , though, we all age, and this aging shows up in our faces. Collagen production decreases, Elastin production decreases and Fat cells disappear. These changes alone result in the natural puffiness in our skin being reduced, our skin taking on a "flat look". Also our skin renewal process- where the dead skin cells fall away as new ones grow in their place-- happens slower. These normal skin aging events unfold gradually over time, depending on our genes.

But there are other issues when it comes to our skin aging. Most of these we have at least some ability to control. Smoking and drinking excessive alcohol accelerate the aging process, showing up as that hardened weathered look. These two factors are probably the easiest to eliminate -- quit smoking and don't drink so much!

The sun is also a big factor, causing wrinkles, discolorations, spots, splotches and freckles. Scientists call this sun induced aging of our skin, "Photoaging". We can't avoid the sun altogether, but we can protect our skin from it by covering up with clothing where practical (hats, shirts). We can also make it a practice to always apply sunscreen before going outside. Most lines of cosmetics these days have some basic sun protective factor (SPF) included in them; look for ones with at least a SPF 15 listed.
