Dry skin care
In the grand scheme of things, there is Dry Skin and then there is . . . Really Dry Skin. Dry Skin is that tight, sometimes flaky condition on our face, which may at times also affect our arms or legs. Really Dry Skin, is that which affects our skin all over, from our scalp to our toes. Often this condition will be accompanied not just by flaky-ness but by severe itching, rashes and splotchiness.
Dry skin is caused by a low level of sebum (the fatty oil released from our sebaceous glands). When these glands do not produce adequate amounts of sebum/oil, there will not be enough lubrication on the skin, and the skin will be unable to retain moisture.
You must be very careful with skin care products as they can exacerbate your dry skin, making it much worse.
Dry Skin Care Tips
- Bath carefully. Use only tepid water when bathing. Avoid hot water at all costs. Hot water may feel good initially but you will pay for its later. Hot water tends to remove the natural skin oils.
- Use only mild soaps or non soap cleansers, such as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
or Dove Beauty Bar
. Avoid scented or perfumed soaps and cleansers.
- Do not rub your skin with the towel to dry it. Instead pat it dry gently and immediately apply your moisturizer. Applying the moisturizer while your skin is damp (not soaking wet!) traps the water still clinging to the skin surface and aids in hydrating your skin.
- Never shave your skin when it is dry. Do not use soap products for shaving, instead use a lubricating shaving cream or get.
The goal, if you have dry skin, is to take care of it so that it is clean and supple, giving it that age-less flawless look.
Dry Skin needs special, gentle skin care products.
- The cleansers you use on your skin should be chemical free and use natural ingredients when possible. The Korres Milk based line of cleansers
are great for dry skin containing a high concentration of quality natural botanicals while keeping harsh chemicals to a minimum.
- Likewise moisturizers need to be effective, but gentle. It is important to have silicone and antioxidants in your anti aging moisturizers. Two good moisturizers for dry skin are M.D. Forte's Replenish Hydrating Cream.
and Boscia Recharging Night Moisture
.
