Basic Skin Care Tips

Nourish Your Skin

The skin is actually the largest organ in the human body. It is made up of several layers of cells and requires nourishment and protection the same as other organs in our body. The health of our skin is dependent largely upon staying hydrated -- full of water. Since one of the main functions of the skin is to work as a natural air conditioner, our skin naturally looses water constantly. We tend to recognize this as our sweating mechanism, but there is a lot of water loss that we don't notice. The sun and other environmental factors combined with that water loss contributes to the aging process as our dehydrated cells are more easily broken down.

The beautiful glow of healthy, radiant skin does not come by just great skin care although that is extremely important.  Contributing to the healthy glow of our skin is an overall healthy, fit body, including a healthy mind and emotional state.

One of our skin's roles is that of a garbage disposal – riding the body of impurities and toxins.  Our skin is part of our natural filtering system.  Chemical imbalances in the body, poor diet and toxin buildup will be apparent by looking at the skin.  There will be an overall discoloration, increased blemishes and acne, dark circles under the eyes, loss of skin elasticity.  Stress and worry, depression, emotional difficulties all show up in the look of our skin.

Eat and drink to nourish your skin. Consume a diet rich in antioxidant foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and low fat meats. A good diet will be low in caffeine, sugar, and alcohol as well as artificial sweeteners. Avoid processed sugars. A good diet that is and high in vegetables and whole grains will have a positive impact on our skin.  Drink lots of water so your body will transport the toxins out through the kidneys instead of having them have to be secreted through the skin.
Exercise regularly, and include both weight resistance and aerobics. Exercise stimulates your circulation which increases the blood flow to your skin. The blood that flows through our skin layers serves to substitute nutrients and oxygen for toxins. Yoga or some sort of meditative activity will help to rid the body of stress and worry which result in premature aging of skin.

Don't Abuse Your Skin

Do not subject your skin to pollutants. Avoid smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol, both of which cause your skin to age prematurely. Stay away from tanning beds, and make sure to protect your skin in extreme weather.

Protect Your Skin -- Implement a Personal Skin Care System

Gently cleanse and moisturize your skin according to your skin type and the season of the year. Always protect your skin from sun damage. Sun exposure is necessary to take in Vitamin D, but very small amounts of exposure will provide you with the daily requirement of Vitamin D.

Establish a routine skin care program.
